The China Apps Foreigners Actually Need in 2026

Before a China trip, sort out mobile data first, then install WeChat, Alipay, Amap, Trip.com and one AI assistant. That stack covers communication, payments, navigation, multilingual bookings and translation. Add Railway 12306 for official train services; add shopping, local-life and Shanghai resident apps only when a real need appears.

This order comes from daily use in Shanghai and was checked against current official payment, railway, tax and connectivity information on 4 August 2026.

1. What should you install before flying to China?

The first five solve the problems that can stop a trip: no data, no way to pay, no reliable map, no multilingual booking support and no way to read Chinese. Everything else can wait. If you are relocating rather than visiting, use the Shanghai first-30-days setup sequence alongside this guide.

2. How should you get internet in China: eSIM, roaming or VPN?

For most short trips, the simplest answer is international roaming from your home carrier or a travel eSIM that routes data outside mainland China. That connection can keep Google, WhatsApp and other foreign services available on mobile data without a separate VPN. A mainland Chinese SIM is better for a +86 phone number and a long stay, but its data connection follows mainland network restrictions.

How to choose a China travel eSIM

Not every product labelled “China eSIM” uses the same routing. Before paying, check five things:

1. The plan explicitly says it supports the foreign services you need, such as Google, WhatsApp or ChatGPT, or says its traffic routes outside mainland China.
2. Your phone is carrier-unlocked and eSIM-compatible.
3. The plan states whether it starts on installation or on first connection in China.
4. The data allowance and hotspot limit fit your trip.
5. You can install the eSIM, open the provider app and save its activation details before departure.

Airalo’s current China plans say their traffic routes outside mainland China. Holafly and Saily publish similar access claims for their current China products. Trip.com also sells travel eSIMs; choose the specific listing that names the services you need rather than assuming every plan includes overseas routing.

Most travel eSIMs are data-only. Keep your home SIM active for bank verification texts, but turn off data roaming on that line to avoid surprise charges.

Why a VPN should be a backup, not the whole plan

Mullvad is working in China as of 4 August 2026. Its current China guide says the Asian servers are blocked, so start with a US server and try an anti-censorship mode if the default connection fails. Install and sign in before departure. Mullvad may be blocked later, so keep roaming or an overseas-routed eSIM as the backup connection.

If you are comfortable configuring network tools, a proxy subscription service such as GLaDOS or Just My Socks is often the stronger laptop or long-stay option. Setup is more involved because you need a compatible client and must import the subscription, but the extra route choice usually delivers better speed and stability than depending on one mass-market VPN app. New GLaDOS users can enter promo code HELLOCHINA for 10% off.

For a longer stay, the most useful setup is often two lines: a mainland SIM for a +86 number and Chinese services, plus an overseas-routed eSIM or home-carrier roaming for foreign services.

Your internet choice decides which AI assistants work

Without an overseas-routed data connection or a working VPN, ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini are not available on ordinary mainland mobile data or Wi-Fi. OpenAI and Anthropic also do not list mainland China among their supported locations, so network access alone does not make them the dependable choice for a China trip.

Install Doubao, Kimi or DeepSeek as the translation assistant that works on a normal Chinese connection. If your existing ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini account also works through your travel connection, keep it as a second option.

3. Which payment apps work best with a foreign card?

Set up both WeChat and Alipay, complete passport real-name verification in both, and link cards before departure. WeChat is the all-round communication and mini-program app; Alipay is the independent payment backup and adds its own NFC “Tap” flow.

Real-name verification is not required for every small payment, but skipping it is a bad trade. In practice, unverified overseas accounts are much more likely to be caught by risk controls; the account can be restricted or frozen and its payment function may stop until the identity review is resolved. Verify both wallets before you fly—you do not want to discover this problem at a restaurant checkout.

WeChat and Weixin Pay: merchant QR codes work, personal transfers do not

A visitor normally downloads WeChat. Inside it, Tencent calls the mainland payment service Weixin Pay. Weixin and WeChat are separate but interoperable sister services: Weixin is designed for mainland users, while WeChat is the international service. WeChat Pay HK is a separate Hong Kong-dollar wallet for eligible Hong Kong users.

A linked international card can pay a QR code when Weixin processes the scan as a merchant purchase. This includes many small shops and street vendors using registered static merchant collection codes. The same card cannot fund a true person-to-person transfer, a personal receive-money QR code or a red packet.

The payment page gives the answer immediately: if your linked international card appears as a selectable payment method, the scan is an eligible merchant purchase. If it does not appear, use Alipay or ask whether the seller has a merchant collection code.

If you are moving to China and need Balance, transfers, red packets, bill splitting and the full Weixin Pay wallet, open a mainland Chinese RMB bank account and link its debit card. Foreigners can open an account at a bank branch with a passport; banks normally also ask for a Chinese mobile number. Use the same passport name for the bank and WeChat, then finish real-name verification. This is the practical route to unlocking the complete daily wallet rather than staying in international-card merchant-payment mode.

Under Tenpay’s current international-card fee rules, a single payment of RMB 200 or less has no service fee; a payment above RMB 200 normally has a 3% fee. Tencent’s current first-time-user offer waives that 3% fee for 90 consecutive days after the first transaction, on daily WeChat spending up to RMB 1,000.

Alipay: the backup with NFC payment

Set up Alipay even if WeChat will be your main app. If WeChat risk control temporarily restricts an account, an independently verified Alipay account prevents a payment problem from stopping the day. Alipay also provides merchant QR payments, public-transport codes, ride-hailing and visitor mini programs.

Alipay Tap is the important difference from the normal Weixin Pay flow. At a merchant with an Alipay Tap terminal or tag, unlock an NFC-capable phone and tap it to start the Alipay payment or service flow. International visitors can use Alipay Tap with eligible international cards linked to Alipay. It is Alipay’s own contactless QR-based system, not a promise that the foreign card will work by tapping any ordinary bank-card terminal.

Fun fact: the passport face scan used for Alipay identity verification is not facial payment. Alipay’s current cashier face-payment rules require a mainland-China real-name account linked to a mainland phone number. A standard visitor account therefore pays by QR code or Alipay Tap.

TenPayGo: an optional third payment route

TenPayGo is a simple English payment app that uses the Weixin Pay merchant network. On iPhone it can use Apple Pay as a funding route, and WeChat can also pay with eligible international cards stored in Apple Pay. At the shop, the normal action is still scanning a merchant QR code or showing an in-app payment code.

TenPayGo is useful as a third route; it does not replace WeChat chat, groups or mini programs. Tencent’s 90-day fee-waiver announcement is for first-time users linking an international card to WeChat, so activate that offer in WeChat first if the saving matters.

4. Which apps should you use for maps and translation?

Amap: navigation, nearby search and faster ride-hailing

Amap, also called Gaode Maps or 高德地图, is the strongest all-round map for daily life in China. Use it for walking, driving and public transport; finding nearby hotels, malls, restaurants and coffee shops; and checking the expected travel time for a future departure.

Amap sends a ride request to multiple ride-hailing platforms and compares prices in real time. That usually makes the trip cheaper than opening one operator’s app, while the larger driver pool often finds a car faster.

Save the Chinese name and address of your hotel or home in Amap. Chinese venue names are more reliable when several branches share a similar English name.

Use an AI assistant for translation

An AI assistant is more useful than a basic translation app for most daily situations. Paste a message, upload a photo of a menu or notice, or ask it to explain a form in plain English. You can also type: “Say this politely in Chinese and read it aloud” and let the phone speak for you.

Keep one mainland option — Doubao, Kimi or DeepSeek — ready on any Chinese connection. ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini are also accurate translators when both the travel connection and the account support them.

5. Why is Trip.com essential, and when do you need Railway 12306?

Trip.com: the multilingual travel hub

Trip.com is a core app for foreign visitors, not a train-only add-on. It combines international and domestic flights, hotels, train tickets, attraction tickets, airport transfers, car rentals and other travel services in a multilingual interface. It also supports international payment methods and 24/7 English customer service.

That combination matters when a hotel booking changes, a flight is delayed or a train reservation needs help in English. For hotel bookings, Trip.com also makes it easier to identify properties that accept foreign passports and to keep the Chinese address and booking confirmation in one place.

Railway 12306: the official train channel

Railway 12306 is the official China Railway app and website. Use it when you want direct booking, changes and refunds without an intermediary, or when you need railway services beyond the ticket itself.

The app also includes:

• Advance meal ordering on supported trains and stations.
• Light Travel luggage service, including door-to-station and station-to-door pickup and delivery on supported routes.
• Pet consignment on selected high-speed trains marked for the service.

These service pages are mainly Chinese and appear only for supported trains or stations. If you need one, use an AI assistant to read the page or ask a Chinese speaker to help complete the booking before travel.

6. Which apps make daily life easier after arrival?

Meituan and Dianping: book, compare and save

Use Meituan for attraction tickets, hotel bookings, restaurant group-buying vouchers, food delivery and local services. It becomes especially useful once you have a working delivery address and phone number.

Dianping is China’s Yelp and Google Reviews in one app. Use it to find restaurants, bars, spas, family activities and entertainment, then buy restaurant packages and coupons that can cut the final bill substantially.

Be careful with shops sitting suspiciously close to a perfect score; some merchants buy positive reviews. Before going, look through recent user photos. They usually show the real portions, room and atmosphere better than the headline rating.

JD and Taobao: shopping plus home services

Both apps sell almost everything and also offer services such as phone or computer repair, home cleaning and other on-demand help.

JD has the better English interface. Many product descriptions and text inside product images remain Chinese, so AI screenshot translation is still useful. JD’s logistics are usually faster; in Shanghai, many in-stock products can arrive within 24 hours.

Taobao has the wider and more varied selection. Start with JD when speed and a cleaner English interface matter most; start with Taobao when choice, niche products or more sellers matter most.

Xiaohongshu: China’s closest equivalent to Reddit

Xiaohongshu, also called REDnote, is the most useful everyday search engine on this list. People use it to research neighbourhoods, rentals, shops, travel, products and the practical questions that ordinary search results answer badly.

It is also China’s closest equivalent to Reddit: a large community built around personal experience and direct answers. The app has built-in translation, and English comments or posts often receive friendly answers from Chinese users. Its international community grew sharply after the TikTok-ban disruption in 2025.

Xiaohongshu is also an efficient place to sell second-hand items or find someone to take over a rental. A direct sublet can avoid an agency fee.

7. Which Shanghai apps matter if you are staying long term?

Public transport: use WeChat or Alipay first

For most people, the easiest Shanghai public-transport option is the transit QR code inside WeChat or Alipay. It handles the normal metro and bus flow without another app.

A frequent commuter may prefer an NFC Shanghai Transportation Card because tapping the phone is faster than opening a QR code. It covers Shanghai buses, metro, ferries, the Jinshan Railway and Songjiang trams.

Suishenban: Shanghai government services

Suishenban is Shanghai’s official government-service app. Foreign residents can use its international-user flow for city services, official records and applications. Install it when a Shanghai procedure directs you there.

Individual Income Tax: filing and refunds for foreign employees

Foreign employees can use the Individual Income Tax app to check declared income and prepaid tax, confirm deductions, complete annual reconciliation and request an individual income tax refund.

Registration depends on the identity document:

• A Foreign Permanent Resident ID Card supports face-recognition registration.
• A person using a foreign passport should take the passport to a tax service hall, receive a registration code, and use that code in the app within seven days.

Employers normally withhold salary tax during the year; the app shows what was reported and handles the annual calculation. Lianjia and Xianyu: housing data and second-hand bargains

Lianjia is the strongest reference for Shanghai asking rents, sale listings, neighbourhood price ranges and market history. Use it to test whether an agent’s quote is realistic before viewing. For practical search support, start with Hello China’s Shanghai apartment service and compare each option with commute and neighbourhood needs.

Xianyu is a mixed second-hand market where furniture and electronics can be excellent value. Before paying, read the seller’s received reviews and check the account’s credit level. For valuable items, deal only with users who have very high credit and no bad reviews, and keep the conversation and payment inside Xianyu.

8. How should you set everything up before your flight?

1. Confirm that the phone is carrier-unlocked and eSIM-compatible, then install the chosen travel eSIM. If using a VPN for Wi-Fi or laptop access, install and sign in before departure.
2. Download WeChat, Alipay, Amap, Trip.com and one mainland AI assistant from their official app-store listings.
3. Register WeChat and Alipay with the name shown on the passport, complete real-name verification in both, and link a supported international card to each.
4. If possible, use cards from two different issuers so one bank decline does not disable both payment apps.
5. Save the hotel or home name, Chinese address and phone number as an offline screenshot. Save Trip.com confirmations offline as well.
6. After arrival, make one small payment, open the local transport QR code, search the first destination in Amap and test the AI photo-translation flow.
